Arsenal have completed the signing of 19-year-old defender Calum Chambers from Southampton for a currently undisclosed fee.

Chambers becomes one of the latest Southampton academy products to have signed for Arsenal following the path of now teammates Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott.

He is Arsenal’s fourth signing so far this transfer window following that of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina. Also becoming the fifth player to leave Southampton this transfer window.

Arsene Wenger admitted he may be taking a gamble with Chambers only having made 18 premier league appearances last season.

Wenger hailed the versatility of Chambers saying “He can play at centre-back, right-back and central midfield” hoping that he will give competition for all three positions. Whilst also making clear that he believes there is great potential for Chambers in football; “He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future”.

This is also thought to be prompting the move of Carl Jenkinson away from Arsenal. With interest from West Ham, Jenkinson is likely to move away from Arsenal this summer transfer window with rumours speculating of a £3 million move to Hull.
